OK...so we have renters. Long story, don't want to say anything defamatory in case they somehow find my blog (long shot, but still). BUT, there are broken pipes in the rental house. Our old house. The one I brought That Kid home to when he was 4 days old. The one that I bought with That Dad when we were newly married.
Last week, we found out that there was a broken pipe in the bathroom downstairs. It deteriorated. Had it fixed today, and it's going to be around $2,500 to fix the problem, PLUS fixing the floor, which had to be jack hammered. On his way out, That Plumber discovered there's also a broken pipe in the wall (when the renters were dumping water down the kitchen sink). Hopefully an easy fix will take care of it. The easy fix which will be another $2,500. The not so easy fix will be between $7,000 and $8,000. The not so easy fix will require ripping out a portion of the stairs.
Some of the issue may be that it went from a family of three to a family of six, soon to be seven, living in the home. Who knows. What I do know is that it's costing us money for these people to be living in our home when we're supposed to be making money. It's making me just sick to my stomach.
That Step-Father-in-Law keeps telling us that we can't think of the rental as our home; that we need to think of it as a business investment. But, we didn't WANT to be landlords. Neither one of us are very good at being forceful. I heard a term today on The People's Court, "Compassionate Landlords". That's us. Being compassionate is what got us in this situation to begin with.
